Volunteering

Being a volunteer is a special experience—you’ll build friendships and memories to last a lifetime. But the real beauty of the Kappa volunteer experience is its flexibility—whether you have three or 30 hours to give, there’s a volunteer experience waiting for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I consider volunteering for the NYAA?
A: Becoming a local volunteer with Kappa has a number of benefits, including:
  • Developing new skills to add to your resume
  • Networking and developing life-long friendships
  • Opportunities for free travel to regional and national Fraternity meetings
  • Providing important resources to other Kappas like yourself
  • And ensuring that Kappa truly is "for a lifetime," in your own backyard!
Q: What kind of NYAA volunteer roles are available?
A: We have three types of roles available:
1. Our elected Executive Board positions:
  • President
  • Vice President of Membership
  • Vice President of Programming
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
2. Our appointed Chair positions:
  • Chapter Relations Chair
  • Panhellenic Chair
  • Philanthropy Chair
  • Social Media Chair
Q: What does each position entail?
A: Read our position descriptions for more information:
Q: How long do people typically serve in positions?
A: Executive Board positions are for two-year terms and Chair & Committee positions are for one-year terms. Kappa alumnae association fiscal years run from July to June of each year, so elected members take their positions as of July 1 and end as of June 30.

Q: What requirements do I need to meet in order to hold a position?
A: To hold any position in the NYAA, you must:
  • Be a member in good standing of the NYAA (a.k.a. have paid your dues for the current fiscal year)
  • Be able to make a one or two year commitment to your position
  • Be willing to contribute and learn from your fellow volunteers
  • Be enthusiastic about meeting new people and supporting Kappa's mission locally
  • Be ready to have lots of fun along the way!
Q: How does the alumnae association nominating process work?
A: The NYAA's nominating process follows our approved Bylaws:
  1. The NYAA President appoints a Nominating Committee Chair in the fall of each year to be in charge of the nominating process for elected positions.
  2. The “Nom Com Chair” recruits two other NYAA members to serve on her committee, and puts a call out for submissions to NYAA members.
  3. All NYAA members in good standing are encouraged to either submit their name or nominate another member for the open positions.
  4. Once the submission deadline has passed, the Nominating Committee reviews the applicants and “slates” the most qualified candidates for each available role.
  5. The Nominating Committee then “presents the slate” to NYAA members, and a vote is held on the slated positions by NYAA members in good standing. Members can either vote with the slate, or write in their vote for another member in good standing.
  6. The votes are tallied by April 30 of each year, and then the newly elected members are announced!
Q: How do you become “appointed” to a volunteer role?
A: The NYAA President makes all appointments for available Chair positions before July 1 of each year. The Vice President of Programming and the Vice President of Membership make all appointments to their respective committees on an on-going basis. To express interest in a specific position, please email nyckappas@gmail.com.

Q: I’m brand new to the NYAA, do I have to wait a certain amount of time before holding a position?
A: Absolutely not! We’re always looking for Kappas of all ages to help us keep the NYAA active, whether you’ve been in NYC for 6 days, 6 months, or 6 years.

Q: I never held a Chapter Council position when I was an undergraduate and/or it’s been a long time since I’ve done anything with Kappa. Am I still eligible to volunteer with the alumnae association?
A: That’s totally OK! We’ll teach you everything you need to know -- you are not expected to be a “Kappa expert” in any way! In fact, it’s very common for alumnae to become more active in Kappa whenever the time is right for them: immediately after graduation, when they've moved to a new town, after their children are a bit older, when looking for a career change, etc.

Q: What if I’m interested in volunteering for Kappa on a regional or national level?
A: Visit kappa.org/kappa/volunteers to learn more and fill out your Volunteer Interest Form (under “I’m ready to volunteer”). Once submitted, the Fraternity’s Director of Talent Management will reach out to you about next steps!

Q: What if I’m more interested in volunteering with actives (college women) currently in a chapter?
A: No problem! Kappa is always looking for local and long-distance advisers and House Board members. Send us an email at nyckappas@gmail.com and we’ll put you in touch with the Advisory Board Specialist for Rho District who can help find the “right-fit role” for you.
